A Game of Thrones |
Published by Bantam Spectra (US) |
This fantasy novel is the first volume in the trilogy "ASong of Ice and Fire". The story mainly follows the family Stark, who are lords of the grim frozen northern kingdom, which is one of the Seven Kingdoms ruled by King Robert Baratheon.
The Stark Family consists of the head of the family noble LordEddard "Ned", his wife Catelyn Tully, their sons Robb,Brandon, Rickon, their daughters Sansa and Arya, and LordEddard's bastard son Jon Snow.
The "Game of Thrones" in the title refers to thefamilies struggles to rule the Seven Kingdoms and destroy all other challengers to the throne. It is a story of soldiers and war, politicians and plots, and heroes and villians.
There is a large cast of characters that Martin switches between, with success most of the time. It is interesting to seethe different families clash with a mixture of success and ruin, and no clear winner at the end of this first volume. With the large cast, any of the main characters may be killed, which creates an interesting atmosphere. The next volume in the series is "A Clash of Kings", and is expected out soon.
Overall this was an excellent novel in a very promising series. 8 out of 10.
