This novel continues the Vlad Taltos series. The main character is Vlad Taltos, a human assassin who works within the Jhereg organisation. The Jhereg familyis a renegade clan in the Dragaeran world where Vlad has made a life for himself. Dragearan's are non-human beings similar to humans but taller and afforded sorcereous powers from their link to their Emperor's Orb.
This volume explains how Vlad acquires his intelligent "pet" reptile Loiosh. There is also a little "work" for Vlad involving a member of the Jhereg.
This is the first Brust novel I have tried so I cannot form a complete opinion of his work. The plot move at a fast pace with he action fast and furious. It holds the readers attention from cover to cover, but some times does not stop to explain some points that may be known to regular readers of the series. Vlad's world is very well built with a complex history and social structure.
I am looking forward to reading my next "The Adventures of Vlad Taltos" book.
